Chapter Fifteen

Aztec stood over the bed and stared down at Eva, at the softness of her skin, the ridges of her toned back as he slid his jeans off. He was bone weary. This week had been long, but today had been the most trying.

He was the alpha in his heart and soul, but not like other alphas. They were arrogant, aggressive, autocratic. He could only play the role, because while he knew his aggression was part of who he was, he would never use it as means of control. And yet, today, as he claimed his place as pack alpha, he felt powerful. Gunner at his side, Clarice and Bolt supporting him without hesitation, Eva, looking at him in awe. Was it love? Was that what this was about? The human concept of love – did Eva think herself in love with him?

He slipped under the covers, the dip of the mattress under his weight causing Eva’s small frame to bounce. She was clinging to the other side, her back to him. Not asleep and he fought with his self-control, because what her really wanted to do was pull her into his arms and hold her to him, kiss her fears away. Make her trust him again. He shuffled onto his side and moved closer to her, then cupped her shoulder into his hand, tracing over it, brushing his fingertips down her spine.

She shivered and straightened her back with a jerk, trying to brush him off. He slid closer, his breath on the back of her neck.

“Stop,” she croaked out. “Or I’ll go sleep on the couch.” It was a lie. He scented her desire for him.

“I won’t let you leave,” he murmured as he dropped his lips on the side of her neck.

She flipped to her back, so she was looking up at him. “So I’ve been told.” Her face was flushed, her eyes narrow and bright with unshed tears.

“If I told you I loved you, would that make a difference?” Those words, to this woman, he didn’t know how to use them.

“Not anymore. No such thing as love, isn’t that what you said?”

He dropped to his back on the mattress, his arm brushing hers. “I don’t know what love is. I know that since that first day, the first time I saw you, I’ve never looked at another woman.”

“If that was the case, then why didn’t you man up and ask me out years ago?”

He wanted to laugh at her words. Man-up? “Because I’m a shifter. Male, but not a man, not in the way you understand it. And you’re human, I was afraid that I would hurt you.”

“You did hurt me. I’m done, Aztec. I’m doing what you need me to do out of some misguided sense of loyalty, but then I’m going home. We don’t have a future because you’re here and my life is in Darkness Falls.” She turned her back again and this time Aztec let her be.

He hadn’t envisioned it playing out this way; he had not really envisioned it all.
